The condition

What is specific phobia?

A specific phobia is an intense, persistent fear that disrupts daily functioning. Per the DSM-5 (APA, 2013), the threshold is avoidance or distress lasting 6 months or more. Look for the pattern: fear is disproportionate to real risk, and avoidance keeps it intact.

Most people who come in know the fear is irrational. They've put off the procedure for three years, or they plan their whole life around surface streets to avoid the freeway.

They want to get back what avoidance has taken from them.

Check the section below on what therapy actually looks like session to session. Specific phobia is one of the conditions Eye Cue Mental Health treats through outpatient individual therapy.

Five subtypes

Common types of specific phobias

01

Animal type

Fear of dogs, spiders, snakes, or other animals. Often starts after a bad encounter and grows into full avoidance of anywhere the animal might be.

02

Natural environment type

Fear of heights, storms, or thunder. Can limit outdoor plans, travel, or even routine activities like driving over bridges.

03

Blood-injection-injury type

Fear of needles, blood, or medical procedures. This is the subtype most likely to cause real health consequences because people put off necessary care.

04

Situational type

Fear of driving, flying, or enclosed spaces like elevators and tunnels. Can shrink a person's daily range significantly over time.

05

"Other" type

Fear of vomiting, choking, or illness. These fears often overlap with health anxiety and can make eating or traveling in groups difficult.

Getting into care

How specific phobia therapy works at Eye Cue Mental Health

1

Call us with your insurance card

We check whether your plan covers outpatient psychotherapy before you book. Medi-Cal is one of the insurances we accept, and we verify before your first session.

2

Get matched with a clinician

We match you with a clinician who has current openings. If the fit isn't right, we match you with another clinician within the practice.

3

Map the fear and build skills

First sessions focus on understanding the specific phobia, its history, and what avoidance looks like for you. Your clinician builds a treatment plan based on your medical necessity.

4

Work at your pace

CBT-based phobia work uses a graded approach toward the feared situation. The pace is yours, not a protocol checklist. Nothing happens faster than you're ready for.

5

Meet in person or by video

Sessions run at our Cerritos office or by telehealth anywhere in California. Same therapist either way. Weekly sessions are the default so momentum doesn't drop between appointments.

How it works

Therapy for phobias without medication

Several of the practices you'll find when you search for phobia care are psychiatry practices that frame specific phobia as a medication-first diagnosis. Eye Cue Mental Health is psychotherapy only. We do not prescribe.

For ongoing phobia work, CBT alone has strong evidence for many people. Our clinicians use CBT, psychodynamic therapy, and solution-focused therapy.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) Most evidence-supported
Psychodynamic therapy
Solution-focused therapy

They'll tell you directly if medication evaluation from your doctor makes sense alongside the therapy work. We refer out when that's clinically honest.

Eye Cue is outpatient only. We don't offer PHP or IOP, and most specific phobias don't need that level of care. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) any time.

Same therapist, in person or by video

Eye Cue is open 7 days, 8 AM to 10 PM. Your clinician is the same person whether you sit in our Cerritos office or join by telehealth anywhere in California. The therapeutic relationship stays intact through the graded approach.

Medi-Cal accepted for specific phobia therapy

Eye Cue Mental Health accepts Medi-Cal, Cigna, Aetna, and many others. Whether your plan covers this depends on your plan and medical necessity, and we verify before your first session. See the full insurance list and county details.

The graded approach, paced by you

We do CBT-based phobia work. We don't run ERP or systematic desensitization by name. Our clinicians build skills with you first, then face the feared situation step by step at the pace you set.

Treatment length based on your medical necessity

Treatment length is based on your medical necessity, not an algorithm. No one is sequencing you to a higher level of care.

Phobia therapy in your language

Six languages beyond English are spoken across our team: Spanish, Farsi, Tagalog, Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi. Confirm the specific language at intake. The vocabulary for fear doesn't translate cleanly through an interpreter. Spanish-speaking therapists and Farsi-speaking therapists are available.

When the phobia has a trauma origin

Some phobias trace to a real event: a dog bite, a crash, a procedure gone badly. For those, EMDR therapy may complement CBT work. A clinician on our team trained in EMDR is available; coverage depends on your plan and medical necessity.

Telehealth across California

Online therapy for specific phobias anywhere in California

If you live anywhere in California, you can work with an Eye Cue clinician by video from home, work, or wherever you feel settled. You keep the same clinician for as long as treatment runs, so the therapeutic relationship stays intact through the graded approach. When it helps, you can switch to in-person sessions at our Cerritos office without changing therapists.

Statewide telehealth depends on your plan. Some Medi-Cal plans are limited to one county: L.A. Care, Carelon, and Health Net Medi-Cal to Los Angeles County, and CalOptima to Orange County. We verify your plan before your first session. See the full insurance list and county details.

Good questions

Frequently asked questions about specific phobia

Still unsure? Call 562-860-2891 and we will talk it through, no commitment.

The DSM-5 names five subtypes. Animal type covers dogs, spiders, and snakes. Natural environment type covers heights and storms. Blood-injection-injury type covers needles, blood, and medical procedures. Situational type covers driving, flying, and enclosed spaces. A fifth "other" category covers fears like vomiting or illness. Most people have a phobia from one subtype.

A phobia is distinct from a passing fear when it persists for six months or more and avoidance disrupts daily life or work. A clinician maps the history and the functional impact. Eye Cue doesn't run formal diagnostic batteries, but our clinicians do thorough intake assessments before building a treatment plan.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most evidence-supported approach for specific phobia. Our clinicians use CBT alongside psychodynamic therapy and solution-focused therapy. The CBT work for phobias uses a graded approach toward the feared situation, paced by you. If the phobia traces to a trauma event, EMDR therapy may also be part of the plan.

Medication is not required for ongoing phobia work. CBT-based therapy has strong evidence on its own. Some people take medication from their doctor for high-stakes moments, like a flight or a procedure. Our clinicians tell you directly if a medication evaluation makes sense. Eye Cue is psychotherapy only. We refer out when that's right.

Treatment length is based on your medical necessity, not a fixed number of sessions or an algorithm. Our clinicians don't end treatment on a quota. They end it when it's clinically right.

The first sessions map the fear: its history, its triggers, and what avoidance looks like day-to-day. Your clinician builds practical coping tools, then begins the graded approach at your pace. If you're working on a driving phobia, no one asks you to get on the freeway in session one.

Yes, Medi-Cal is one of several insurances we accept. Whether your specific plan covers specific phobia therapy depends on your plan and medical necessity, and we verify before your first session. Call 562-860-2891 with your insurance card. See the full insurance list and county details.

We match you with another clinician in the practice. You don't lose your place in the insurance process. Getting the right fit matters for phobia work specifically because the graded approach loses traction when the therapeutic relationship isn't solid. Tell us early and we fix it.
