The approach

What is anger management therapy?

Anger management therapy is psychotherapy that treats what is driving chronic anger, not just the outbursts. Based on 8 years of intakes at our clinic, anger most often traces to trauma, a mood disorder, anxiety, or ADHD. Your clinician gives you tools to continue your treatment on your own time, between sessions, not just during them.

This is therapy for the emotions and patterns underneath the anger. It is not a court-ordered class. If you start with individual therapy and later want to keep the same clinician by video, you can move to telehealth therapy without restarting your treatment plan.

What it helps with

What is actually driving the anger?

Most adults who search for anger management are dealing with one of these six underlying issues. Treating the driver is what changes the pattern, not managing the surface reaction alone.

PTSD or unresolved trauma

Trauma responses often present as anger in adults. Trauma therapy and trauma-informed outpatient care address the event itself, not just the reaction it produces.

Depression presenting as irritability

Depression in adults frequently shows as a short fuse rather than sadness. CBT addresses the thought patterns that make small frustrations feel unbearable.

Anxiety and chronic stress

Anxiety raises the nervous system baseline, so anger triggers fire faster and harder. Emotional regulation skills and coping techniques reduce that baseline over time.

ADHD and impulse-control concerns

Impulse-control concerns and untreated ADHD produce anger that is fast, intense, and followed by regret. Clinicians work with these patterns in individual outpatient therapy at Eye Cue.

Substance use and co-occurring issues

Alcohol lowers the threshold for explosive anger. A clinician who focuses on substance use and dual diagnosis can work on both at once in one outpatient practice.

Adjustment disorder and life stress

A major life change such as job loss or divorce can produce a reactive state that looks like an anger problem. Adjustment disorder responds well to CBT in an outpatient setting.

The process

How does therapy for anger work at Eye Cue?

Intake call. Call 562-860-2891 and speak with our intake team. We confirm your insurance, ask what is bringing you in, and match you with a clinician whose focus fits your situation.

First session. Your clinician listens to your full picture, not just the anger but the context around it. They are looking for the driver, not just the symptom.

Weekly therapy. Sessions run at the cadence your clinician determines is medically appropriate. Most anger work runs weekly. You build coping skills and emotional regulation tools to use between sessions.

Adjustments as needed. If your insurance changes, we work with you rather than dropping you. If the clinician fit is not right, you can switch within Eye Cue without starting over.

What this is

Is this therapy or a court-ordered class?

This is therapy. Eye Cue Mental Health provides individual psychotherapy for anger. We do not run a structured, court-ordered anger management class, and we do not issue completion certificates for probation, the court, or any legal requirement. If you need a court-mandated program, call 211 and they can connect you with providers that offer one.

Most people who search for anger management therapy in Cerritos want to stop being the angriest person in the room. That change does not come from a curriculum. It comes from working weekly, with the same clinician, on what is actually feeding the anger.

You are in charge of your treatment. No algorithm sequences you to a higher level of care, and no session quota ends the work before you are ready.

What insurance is accepted for anger therapy?

Medi-Cal covers roughly 70% of our current caseload. Coverage depends on your plan and medical necessity, and we verify your benefits before your first session.

Good questions

Frequently asked questions about anger management therapy

Still unsure? Call 562-860-2891 and we will talk it through, no commitment.

No. Eye Cue Mental Health provides individual psychotherapy, not a structured anger management class. We do not issue court-ordered completion certificates for legal compliance. If you need that, 211 can connect you with programs that do.

Based on cases we see, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a common, well-established approach for anger in outpatient therapy. The right fit depends on the driver: CBT for distortion-driven anger, trauma-focused therapy for PTSD-related anger, family therapy for relational triggers. Our clinicians assess which fits your situation in your first session.

Yes. Approximately 70% of our current clients are on Medi-Cal, and we have held those contracts since November 2017. Whether your specific Medi-Cal plan covers anger therapy depends on your plan and medical necessity; we confirm your benefits before your first session starts.

No. We work with clients through insurance changes rather than terminating care when a plan changes. If a change puts you outside our current contracts, we tell you directly and help you figure out next steps.

Treatment length is based on your medical necessity, not on an insurance session cap or a fixed curriculum. Your clinician determines the right cadence and length with you. No algorithm sequences you to a higher level of care.

Most anger work, including CBT, emotional regulation, and reviewing triggers and patterns, translates well to video. Some clients benefit from coming to the Cerritos office periodically, especially early in treatment. You can move between telehealth and in-person with the same therapist as your situation changes.

That is what the session is for. Our clinicians are trained to hold that space. Getting activated in session is often where useful work happens; the clinician can observe the pattern directly rather than only hearing about it later.
